Physically experimenting with the possibilities inherent in rhythms will help you to better understand the notation of the action. We encourage you to get up and play with the level, direction, size, and timing of your steps.

This is an exercise for hearing subdivisions of beats.


The first time through, try walking on every count. You will first hear the single beat, and then a douple division. Then, practice alternating between the single and douple. The next time you will hear the single beat, followed by a triple division, and the same pattern.
